More Trees Planted than Harvested – Berto digs in

Trees are the primary resource when it comes to making paper we use in printers and copiers. So we cut them down and consume them.

Some countries, like the USA, are planting more trees than it harvests. In the case of the USA, it is estimated to be more than 4,000,000 trees per day. Some estimates give 5 million.

Tree plantation drives combat many environmental issues like deforestation, erosion of soil, desertification in semi-arid areas, global warming and hence enhancing the beauty and balance of the environment. Trees absorb harmful gases and emit oxygen resulting in an increase in oxygen supply. On average, according to Wikipedia, “a single tree emits 260 pounds of oxygen annually. Similarly, a fully-grown tree is sufficient for 18 human beings in one acre of land in one year stressing the importance of tree plantation for mankind.”

According to Thomas Crowther, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, there are approximately 3.04 trillion trees on the planet today. However, annual tree harvest vs. production on a world-wide scale shows that humans cut down approximately 15 billion trees a year and re-plant about 5 billion.
