HP Warns Updates Will Impact Consumers and Aftermarket

HP Warns Updates Will Impact Consumers and AftermarketHP has issued a warning on its website that it will “update” 902-909 and 952-959 ink cartridges with warranty-end dates between January to April 2021, in December this year.

The OEM came under criticism and been subject to anger from industry groups and consumers for issuing updates, sometimes covertly, that prevent them from using third-party supplies in their printers.

The company claims that the ink cartridges that will be updated are compatible with both current and future printers that use these cartridge numbers. Cartridge and printer availability and compatibility may vary by region.

Beginning December 1, 2020:

  • HP 902, 903, 904, 905, 906XL, 907XL, 908XL, and 909XL cartridges with Warranty-end dates of April 2021 or earlier might not be compatible with these HP OfficeJet printers:

  • HP 952, 953, 954, 955, 956XL, 957XL, 958XL, and 959XL cartridges with Warranty-end dates of January 2021 or earlier might not be compatible with these HP OfficeJet Pro printers:

Original HP cartridges installed in these printers prior to December 1, 2020, will function normally and without interruption.

Beginning in early 2019, HP began shipping a new updated version of the following ink cartridges: HP 902, 903, 904, 905, 906XL, 907XL, 908XL, 909XL, 952, 953, 954, 955, 956XL, 957XL, 958XL, and 959XL.

HP claims that its updates on consumables or printers, from time to time, are to improve quality, enhance security, and prevent counterfeit and warranty fraud.

It is inevitable, the company says, that updates will impact many end-users and aftermarket companies.

How do I continue to use my HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 when I can’t buy ink. At this time (and while working at home) I am unable to get the cartridges I need to function. This printer was not purchased too long ago, so apparently I was not informed that the printer would be obsolete. What can be done and if any, what other cartridges will work on this printer?

Buy a new non hp printer. I have purchased 4 hp printers in the past and currently have an hp laptop. I will never buy hp again. I complained directly to them and receive no response. They don’t care about their customers, well I don’t care about them. My business goes elsewhere and it slready did with my printer purchase. I will be buying my son a new laptop for college in the fall. It will NOT be hp.

The number of pages printed does not match what they say, ink purged Everytime you use the printer, you call it maintance, the XL is even less pages. I will never purchase HP again, tired of high priced ink that doesn’t last, shame on you

I agree. Good bye HP. I’ve bought ink cartridges and have used Very few pages. Bought the XL and, as another commenter mentioned, ended up with the same result. Sad to see that my experience is a common one. Buyer Beware!
