EU Law Enforced to Make Sustainable Products the Norm
A new EU law has come effective, focusing on the ecodesign and sustainability requirements for almost all categories of physical products that enter the EU market.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on July 18, 2024, constitutes European Commission’s effort towards a market environment with more environmentally circular products. Under the guidance of this initiative, the new law will ensure that products will be more durable to last, easier to repair, safer to use, more efficient to perform, and readier to be recycled. Consumers will benefit from these changes regarding maintenance cost and user experience.
Build on the existing successful Ecodesign Directive, the ESPR aims to extend its effect to a greater extent. This include a wider range of products, a longer list of metrics, and more responsibilities for companies. To cater to the different requirements for different products, the ESPR is working progressively to categorize products into groups based on their characteristics before implementing the legal requirements. All products under the regulation of the ESPR will be tagged with a Digital Product Passport, which customers can scan to access the sustainability information of the product and make more informed choice.
In terms of imaging consumables and device, they will be covered by a different Ecodesign framework, which is under current discussion. Further working plans will be released by the European Commission, diving tasks into multiannual parts and listing all measures to be addressed.
