ECS Raises Concerns over Alleged Remanufactured Products

Effective Consumable Solutions (ECS) warns of potential greenwashing in the industry camouflaged as alleged remanufactured products, advocating for legislation regarding the use of the term “remanufactured,” as reported by Recycler.com.

In recent years, the concept of remanufacturing has gained prominence, with companies increasingly focusing on extending the lifespan of their products. However, ECS reports that some suppliers and distributors are falsely labeling their products as “remanufactured,” failing to meet essential environmental standards. This practice fragrantly undermines customer trust, disregards local legislation, and discredits other manufacturers who comply with regulations.

According to ECS, many non-compliant products only superficially adhere to sustainability standards, involving simple processes like drilling, refilling and sealing used cartridges. In more egregious cases, these cartridges may even infringe on existing patents and violate intellectual properties. Manufacturers of these defective products typically lack necessary expertise and facilities to properly remanufacture products without compromising their original functionality and performance.

Lauren Rabbitte, Associate Director of ECS, was concerned that even some large enterprises are engaging in these practices. “Not only are some large organisations within the industry selling and advertising falsely named remanufactured products, they also claim to remanufacture themselves, despite not having access to the infrastructure and supply of empty cartridges necessary to do so.”

ECS believes that the most efficient way to rid of this phenomenon is through stricter legislation. The company hopes future regulations can deter enterprises from greenwashing, ensuring that consumers are informed and can trust the products they purchase.
