Epson Ends Laser Printing Era in Europe and Beyond
Epson Ends Laser Printing Era in Europe and Beyond
Epson has officially concluded sales of laser printers in Europe, marking a significant milestone in its global strategy to transition entirely to Heat-Free inkjet technology by 2026. Originally planned as a gradual phase-out, the initiative has been completed two years ahead of schedule, underscoring Epson’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Epson’s decision to discontinue laser printers reflects the company’s focus on reducing environmental impact. Traditional laser printers rely on heat-intensive processes, resulting in high energy consumption and increased CO₂ emissions. In contrast, Epson’s Heat-Free inkjet technology uses piezoelectric crystals to eject ink, avoiding the need for heat and reducing energy consumption by up to 85%. The transition is expected to save over 2,240 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to 1.3 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide—a reduction comparable to removing 280,000 cars from the road for a year.
Complementing the transition to Heat-Free inkjet technology, Epson has seen immense success with its EcoTank printers, launched in 2010 as an alternative to traditional cartridge systems. These printers feature refillable tanks that minimize waste and lower operational costs. EcoTank models have gained widespread popularity, particularly in emerging markets, due to their affordability and sustainability. By October 2024, global sales had exceeded 100 million units across 170 countries, cementing Epson’s leadership in the market for sustainable printing solutions.
Epson’s proactive approach reflects the growing demand for environmentally conscious products, positioning the company as a leader in sustainable printing. As the industry evolves, Epson’s innovations set a benchmark for energy efficiency, waste reduction, and operational excellence.
