OEMs Donate to Help Quake Victims

There may well be ongoing political tensions between Japan and China, but that did not stop two of the biggest names in Japan from digging deep.

Both Canon and Brother, two of the largest printer manufacturers in the world, have given cash to help victims of last week’s earthquake that struck Yunnan Province, in southern China.

The quake, with a magnitude of 6.5, has so far killed 615, destroying 12,000 homes and damaging 30,000 others.

Brother Industries’ President Toshikazu Koike announced 5 million yen through various organisations including the Red Cross.

The Canon Group is making a donation of 3.2 million Chinese yuan, worth about 518,000 US dollars.

Earthquakes are not new in China, with 192 people killed last year on April 20 in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

Samsung was a big donor that time.

2,968 people died in the 2010 quake in Qinghai, and 87,000 were killed in central China back in May 2008.
