Canon Announces Settlement of Patent Dispute with Aster

Canon recently announced that it has reached an agreement with Aster Graphics Company Limited (Aster), an aftermarket cartridge in China, for an out-of-court resolution regarding Aster’s alleged patent infringement.

According to Canon, Aster has infringed several of its patents, including Nos. 10,691,063, 10,838,356, and 11,320,782. These patents has been incorporated in the key innovations applied to a series of Canon and HP’s toner cartridge models. The list is as followed:

HP toner cartridge models:

• CF360X, CF361X, CF362X, CF363X, CF360A, CF361A, CF362A, CF363A, W2120X, W2121X, W2122X, W2123X, W2120A, W2121A, W2122A, W2123A

Canon toner cartridge models:

• CRG040, CRG064

As part of the settlement, Aster has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to Canon as well as stopped the sale of all compatible models that were subject to the patent dispute, which were mainly sold in the United States market. These products include AP-HF360AK, AP-HF361AC, AP-HF362AY, AP-HF363AM, AP-HF360XK, AP-HF361XC, AP-HF362XY, AP-HF363XM, AP-H2120AK, AP-H2121AC, AP-H2122AY, AP-H2123AM, AP-H2120XK, AP-H2121XC, AP-H2122XY, and AP-H2123XM.

This is not the first time this year Canon dealt with patent infringement cases. In July, Canon filed a lawsuit against Katun and its German subsidiaries, claiming Katun’s toner bottles have infringed its EP’683 patent. Back in 2021, Canon filed a case against Baiyingmei for infringement of its Chinese patent, which was not resolved until May this year.

Throughout the development, sales and marketing process, Canon respects the intellectual property rights owned by other companies and individuals and expects others to similarly respect Canon’s intellectual property rights. Canon remains committed to pursuing legal enforcement against those who do not respect Canon’s intellectual property rights.
