Catalonia Bans Single-use Printer Cartridges

Catalonia, a region located in northeastern Spain, has enacted a new waste law to emphasize circular economy principles,  marking a milestone towards environmental sustainability.

Catalonia Bans Single-use Printer CartridgesThe legislation, inspired by similar measures in the Balearic Islands, aims to revamp waste management across a range of sectors, including the printing industry. One of the main focus of the law is the ban on single-use printer cartridges and toners, effective January 1, 2025. The ban is among a broader prohibition on single-use items and non-recyclable products, including plastic utensils, food containers, plastic bags and non-rechargeable razors.

Better known for its capital, Barcelona, Catalonia is active in a range of fields, including manufacturing, services, tourism, and technology. Catalan dynamic industry mainly encompasses automobile, chemistry, and pharmaceutics. And Catalonia’s ports, especially the Port of Barcelona, are well-located hubs for international trade and business communication. The new act will promote the reuse of materials and promote circular economy, setting a new industrial standard for local businesses.

ETIRA has contributed actively to this significant decision through conversations with Catalonia’s Waste Prevention Agency. These discussions have focused on the new law and the broader implementation of circular criteria in document printing. Key strategies include extending the lifespan of devices and reusing consumables, which are crucial for reducing economic and environmental costs. The collaboration between ETIRA and Catalonia’s authorities demonstrates their commitment towards a sustainable future and responsibility in waste management.
