China’s Zhono Tells Staff to Take a Hike
Instead of telling staff to leave during the downturn brought on by COVID-19, Zhono has told its more than 150 employees there will be “no salary cuts, no delays, and no layoffs” during the epidemic.
Instead, the Guangzhou-based microchip developer and manufacturer has insisted staff go on a 10km hike to improve employee health and teamwork.
On August 15, 2020, the hiking activity, themed “Fighter” revealed Zhono (pronounced ‘jong-no’) to be as concerned for its employees’ wellbeing as much as it is for chip security.
“On the one hand, this hiking activity is to enrich the employees’ spare time. On the other hand, it also encourages all employees to participate in outdoor activity and benefit their health,” a company spokesperson told RT Media.
“Every step and every path we took and every effort we made during the hiking was like what Zhono has been through these years,” one employee told the group. “From setting up a small shop to the building of a manufacturing plant with several R&D departments, from starting in the domestic market to the setting up of an international branch, Zhono has had overcome difficulties time after time and pass by another milestone.”
Zhono prides itself on having staff who have grown in confidence and overcome difficulties together. This activity pushed Zhono team members to brainstorm on certain tasks, to solve problems and to create ideas that would be adopted by the rest of the group during the hike.
The company was established in 2013 to research, develop and manufacture aftermarket chips for use in laser printers and digital copiers. The company claims to be at the cutting edge of ASIC design and System-on-Chip technologies necessary to be capable of keeping up with OEM chip developments and firmware changes.
