ETIRA Encourages Spanish Authority to Embrace Reman Products

ETIRA Encourages Spanish Authority to Embrace Reman ProductsAfter the intervention of ETIRA (European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers Association), Spain’s airport authority, AENA, has decided to include remanufactured printer cartridges in their tender process, marking a significant advance in promoting reuse and advocating the European Green Deal.

AENA’s original tender requirements allowed the entrance of only OEM printer cartridges, claiming it could filter inferior “compatibles”, which have been damaging the reuse sector. However, the complete ban on non-OEM products may have potential environmental implications. Recognizing that, ETIRA lobbied for a revision in the these requirements.

Eventually, ETIRA has successfully persuaded AENA to update its tender to also accept remanufactured cartridges that are made in Europe. To be officially considered and accepted, remanufactured consumables are still required to originate exclusively from the European Union and be labeled a Type I environmental in accordance with ISO 14024, which guarantees the quality of these products. AENA’s decision has received manifest responses, with most of the company branches certified by EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).

Javier Martinez, ETIRA president, was content with this result. “This decision by AENA is a significant win for sustainability and the environment. It demonstrates the value of remanufacturing and supports our goal of reducing waste and promoting reuse” he said. Vincent van Dijk also commented that “this sets a positive precedent for other organizations to follow.”

ETIRA promises to continue the collaboration in achieving environmental goals and creating a greener future in Europe.
