Global Printer Shipments Decrease Significantly Says IDC
According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, global shipments, and the value of those shipments, of hardcopy peripherals (HCP) declined in the first quarter of 2024.
Unit shipments dropped by 17.6% to 18.8 million units, while shipment value decreased by 15.6% to $9.3 billion. Annual declines ranging from 19.9% to 18.2% were observed across all three largest regional markets, primarily due to a less favorable base than in the same period last year.
Additionally, vendors’ reduced willingness to ship due to price reductions and high inventory levels contributed to the downturn.
Regarding the performance of major HCP brands, all experienced contractions to varying degrees.
HP and Epson, which together hold approximately half of the market share, were the most affected, with declines of 20.1% and 19.6%, respectively. In contrast, Brother saw only a slight decrease of 8%. Notably, Brother managed to increase shipments of ink tanks through B2B-focused channels in the Asia/Pacific regions, resulting in year-on-year growth.
