HongKong Strike Frustrates Passengers – is Zhuhai Affected?
Hong Kong International Airport’s website listed 106 outbound flights and 111 inbound flights as having been canceled on August 5. A detailed update on flight status’ is available on the airport’s website.
Aviation workers are part of an estimated 500,000 people from more than 20 business sectors taking part in a city-wide strike following protests that have taken place in the city for more than two months. Protestors are demanding the full withdrawal of a bill that would allow China to extradite suspects from Hong Kong to the mainland but demands have broadened to police accountability and a call for a more democratic system of government. This is Hong Kong’s ninth consecutive week of protests.
Many of the canceled flights were with local carriers Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express.
There were also widespread delays and service suspensions on Hong Kong’s metro system, called the MTR, amid reports of disruptions by protesters taking part in the strike. TheAirport Express that links several stations with the Hong Kong International Airport, was suspended for some time as well.
If your flight to Hong Kong should be affected, take a ferry directly from the airport to Jiuzhou Port (Zhuhai); or use a shuttle car or bus on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to Zhuhai.
If your flight is to Macau, you can also travel easily to Zhuhai through the Gongbei or HengQin border crossings.
If you fly to Shenzhen or Guangzhou, you can also catch a bus from each airport terminal to Zhuhai city.
