HP Firmware Update Disrupts LaserJet Printers
HP has faced backlash after a recent firmware update caused issues for some of its LaserJet M232-M237 printer models. Customers are reporting problems with their printers even when using genuine HP toner, with devices failing to print and displaying error messages after updating to firmware version 20250209.
The update, which was released on March 4, includes “security updates,” “regulatory requirement updates,” and “general improvements and bug fixes,” according to HP. However, users began encountering difficulties shortly after the update was installed, with several reporting Error Code 11 and a flashing toner light when attempting to print.
Some customers have attempted to resolve the issue by cleaning the printer contacts and reinstalling the toner, but the problems persist. One affected user described the situation as “insanely frustrating,” especially after spending $60 on a replacement toner cartridge, only for the printer to remain nonfunctional.
In response to the growing complaints, an HP spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP LaserJet 200 Series devices and our team is actively working on a solution.” Customers experiencing difficulties are encouraged to contact HP support.
This incident follows a pattern of firmware-related problems for HP customers. In May 2023, a firmware update for several HP OfficeJet printers caused widespread issues, leaving devices unable to print and displaying error messages for weeks.
The timing of this latest issue has led to frustration among users, many of whom have expressed concerns about the reliability of HP’s firmware updates. Some forum users have even recommended switching to competing brands, with one commenter sharing that they purchased other brands like Brother, which however recently faced similar allegations of degraded printing quality after installing latest firmware update.
