IDC: China HCP Printer Shipment Hit Record High in Q4

The latest IDC research reveals that China printer HCP market shipment in the fourth quarter of 2020 (Q4, 2020) reached 5.463 million units, up 13.2% compared to the same period last year.

Among that, inkjet printer shipment registered 2.023 million units, up 26.7% year-over-year, while laser printer shipment reported being 2.838 million units, up 13.1% year-over-year. Dot-matrix printer shipment decreased 16.4% year-over-year to 0.6 million units.

However, IDC predicts that China printer market will go through a complicated adjustment period in 2021. The main reason for the supply shortage is as follows:

• Uncertainty of the production resuming of Japanese semiconductor, also the main printer components supplier AKM which was affected by a fire.
• Chip supply shortage which effect will last to the middle of 2021.
• Delivery difficulties caused by COVID-19 which is deemed as the main challenge faced by the printer market in 2021 to ensure stable product supply.

Some other highlights from the research include:

• Inkjet printers still accounted for more share than ink-bank printers, dominating the increasing inkjet market.
• A3 multifunction printers grew fast and strongly.
• A4 laser printer was affected mostly by supply shortage.
• The introduction of relevant policies for the electronic value-added tax invoices made the dot matrix printer market worse.

“The market will still face greater uncertainty in 2021, and the shortage of supply will be the biggest challenge facing the printer market growth in the future. Manufacturers and distributors should be more flexible in formulating production and sales plans for the first half of 2021 to deal with supply shortages, “said Ren Mengxue, senior analyst of IDC China’s Printing, Imaging and Document Solutions Research Department.
