IDC: China Printer Market Shipment Grows in Q2

According to IDC, China printer market shipment was 4.84 million units in the second quarter (Q2), up 1.0% year-over-year or 22.3% quarter-over-quarter. Inkjet printer shipment increased 13.9% year-over-year to 2.14 million units, while laser printer shipment decreased 3.0% year-over-year to 2.30 million units. Dot-matrix printer shipment turned out to be 0.40 million units, decreasing 26.5% year-over-year.

IDC pointed out that demand or supply of China printer market will still face a lot of uncertainty in the second half year although its Q2 performance far exceeded expectation.

• Consumer market demand explode accelerating inkjet printer market growth

In the second quarter, printer demands increased significantly, especially inkjet printers, driven by increasing demands from online education and work from home. Inkjet printer shipment increased 48.9% year-over-year due to competitive price and sufficient supply. Ink Tank printer shipment declined 18.4% year-over-year as its supply was not resumed completely.

Since 2012, various printer manufacturers increased the price of their laser printers, reducing laser market share in the consumer market.

Since the outbreak of the covid-19, consumers have been deepening their understandings about printers. IDC reminds that traditional printer manufacturers should also pay attention to the operation and development of new players such as Xiaomi.

In the short term, the economy will continue to be under pressure, and the commercial printer market demand will recover slowly

Due to the resurgence of covid-19,the  commercial printer market slid again in Q2. After the resurgence,the  A4 laser printer supply recovered to the same period last year. A4 monochrome laser printer increased 1.2% year-over-year, while A4color laser printer supply decreased 5.2% year-over-year.

In Q2, A3 multifunction printers declined 33.3% year-over-year, while dot-matrix printer declined 26.7% year-over-year.
