IDC: Indonesia HCP Market Report Released
According to IDC, the Hardcopy Peripherals (HCP) market in Indonesia experienced a slight year-on-year decline of 1.06% for the fourth quarter in 2023, coupled with a quarter-on-quarter growth of 5.3% compared to Q3 2023. Despite this modest decrease, Q4 still marked the highest shipments in 2023.
The decline can be largely attributed to the deferral of major end users and even some verticals in 2024. Local vendors and channels noted a trend of users delaying purchases and investments since the third quarter of 2023, possibly influenced by political uncertainties related to Indonesia’s election on February 14. In response to customer concerns, vendors have made efforts to penetrate the mainstream market by introducing more powerful models.
Leonard Adiarto Sudjono, IDC’s senior research analyst, noted that while the government sector introduced more projects to align with its peak performance, the private sector demonstrated a more conservative attitude, preferring to defer purchases until after the elections when political uncertainties are settled.
Epson once again occupied the highest market share in Indonesia in Q4, accounting for 64.3%. It primarily benefited from the first mover advantage of introducing ink tank models. The extensive distribution network and supportive channel relations help Epson solidify its market position despite higher price bands in low-end segment. Additionally, better performance of high-end models was also observed thanks to the increased demands for A3 MFP models including L15150 and EcoTank M15140.
Ranking second with a share of 17.2%, Canon has been phasing out the IP2770, one of the most popular ink cartridges, by reducing shipments in the second half of the year to establish its position in the lucrative ink tank market. However, demand for this cartridge did not disappear immediately, and further shipments are still expected, along with other new ink tank models like PIXMA G2730 and PIXMA G3770.
HP followed as the third highest, with an 11% share. It also identified opportunities in the ink tank market, with shipments for its Smart Tank series peaking in 2023. Additionally, other products, including laptops, mice, headsets, and laser copiers, were introduced alongside via the “Future Ready” events held by HP in several major cities.
Leonard remarked, “The Indonesian hardcopy peripherals market witnessed shipment fluctuations in 2023, with increasingly intense competition between brands in both the inkjet and laser segments.” Attention is now focused on the anticipated president succession in the second half of 2024, which is expected to impact government budgets and shape the Indonesian market.
