Italian Port Detains Thousands of Imported Toner Cartridges
20,126 printer toner cartridges equipped with chips have been detained at the Port of Ravenna in Italy.
The reason given, according to ansa.it, is that insufficient labeling information regarding product safety has been provided by the manufacturer or importer responsible.
Checks on goods arriving at Ravenna Port seem to suggest that the importer had never registered in the category of companies that import and market electrical and electronic equipment.
Apparently, the goods, which are now subject to detention, were subsequently regularized by the importer under customs supervision. Only after verifying the conformity of the labeling did the importer receive the consent to place the goods on the market.
At the same time, the Italian importer has been fined over €43,000 (US$51,000).
To make online shops that are not based in the EU more accountable for the quality of their products, the European Union (EU) introduced specific rules about the enforcement of product legislation firstly in 2019. Economic Operator, among the other rules, demands that importers must designate a person to serve as a clear point of contact for questions or problems with the product.
“As Europe rules change with Economic operator who must have immediate access for any authority for any product detail on July 1, we will probably see more of this and more importers who skirt the rules will be caught and fined,” said Steve Weedon, CEO of Print-Rite Pelikan Solutions in Europe.
Established thousands of years ago, the port of Ravenna is the main port of Emilia-Romagna. and the docks are mainly on a canal that connects the inland town centre of Ravenna to the sea 12 km away. Apart from the bulk cargo and containerized cargo terminals, there are also passenger and cruise lines terminals and the biggest marina of the Adriatic Sea.
