Police Seize Thousands of Fake HP Toners in India

According to the Times of India, police, with support from HP’s Anti-Counterfeiting team, have successfully seized 440,000 fake printing consumables, mainly in Mumbai.

Authorities claim the illegal products had a street value of IR30 Crore (US$3.61 million). Most of the products were fake toner and ink cartridges being sold to consumers as genuine HP products at very low prices.

HP’s Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud (ACF) Program aims to protect consumers from counterfeit products while raising awareness about the scale and severity of fraudulent printing supplies in India.

It is estimated that the aftermarket has close to 80 percent of the total supplies market, with the printer OEMs only being able to hold the remaining 20 percent. India is an extremely price-sensitive market, and the trade of fake products impacts not only the printer OEMs but also reputable aftermarket brands.

HP pointed out that while counterfeit ink and toner cartridges might look like genuine HP products, they are often of poor quality and pose a risk to consumer health and the capability of the printing device.

In May 2023, police took decisive action against two operations trading in counterfeit printing supplies for HP, with major raids taking place over ten days.
