There is never a dull moment in this industry and this past month has been no different.
Xerox has increased its tender offer to US$24/share (a combination of $18.4 cash/0.149 share Xerox stock) of HP stock as of about March 2.
Readers of this newsletter will have seen Xerox or Fuji Xerox patents/applications related to pressure fixable toners. Fuji Xerox has now released a clear toner with adhesive capabilities. The toner is prepared by emulsion aggregation process and can be installed in systems using conventional EA type toner. Once printed a commercially available sealer (pressure device) can bond the sheet to another (for example to produce a booklet).
The European Union has just published its official designation classifying titanium dioxide as a Category 2 suspected carcinogen if inhaled. There will be a transitional period before the regulation goes into effect and as you might suspect coatings and other industries are protesting.
UK-based Environmental Business Products has acquired bulk jet ink producers OCP Inks and Compedo Ink and is moving all production from Germany to a facility in Poland.
An article in SpecialChem (on 21 January 2020) reported that researchers from the University of Seville and University of Nottingham have used inkjet printing to produce 3D gold images. The breakthrough came when the team discovered that chemically functionalized arabinose polymers could stabilize the gold particles in a 10 nm range providing dispersions stable for at least 6 months
Canon has reportedly opened a new production facility in Venlo, The Netherlands that will double capacity for its UVgel ink that is used in the Colorado roll-to-roll large format printers. Canon had placed more than 1200 of the units as of 2019
Japan’s UBE Industries has published an article “Maximize performance for UV inks using hyperdispersants”. They describe how their UBEDISP and especially E103 provide extraordinary results in dispersing inorganic pigments for curable UV jet inks –such as ceramic applications. Oki Data and Mimaki Engineering have established an exclusive sales agreement whereby Mimaki will sell Oki’s wide-format inkjet printers
Kyocera Corp. has announced the KJ4EX, its next-generation printhead with 200 mm width, 600 dpi resolution, print speed of 75 m/min, and droplet size of 18 or 24 pl. The heads use aqueous inks
Canon has introduced the imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX range of products that are intended as business “hubs” to offer not only printing but also integrated document workflow management
Epson has introduced the SureColor F3070, its first industrial direct-to-garment inkjet printer. The dual 2.6 inch Printhead provides one-pass for white and color UltraChrome DG inks.
Konica Minolta has officially launched its AccurioPress C14000 series of high-speed digital presses that was initially announced back in October 2019. The press has output potential of up to 140 ppm at up to 3600×2400 equivalent dpi, stocks up to 450 gsm and banner printing up to 51”
Konica Minolta has also added to its line of multifunction toner-based bizhub printers with the introduction of the bizhub C450i, bizhub C550i and bizhub C650i. The A4 units offer speeds up to 45, 55 and 65 ppm; A3 (C450i at 24 mono/19 color). SimitriR polymerized toner with up to 28K/cartridge. 1MM developer life
Kyocera Document Solutions has recently launched its first commercial printer, the “Task Alpha Pro 15000c”, that can provide up to 150 sheets/min A4 size. Technology is based on a proprietary pigmented jet ink
Lexmark has expanded its enterprise line of A3 printers with the introduction of the CX920de and XC9225 multifunction devices. Output is up to 12×18 at up to 25 ppm. The developer units are rated at up to 600,000 pages and cartridges are rated for up to 18,500 black/11,500 color prints.
