Why We Should Support Global Recycling Day
Why We Should Support Global Recycling Day
We know we should all recycle, and slowly, governments, media, and activists are encouraging us to be kinder to our planet.
I started my printer cartridge remanufacturing business in 1993. I could reuse their empty printer cartridges and return them ready to be used again, saving them money and the environment. To be honest, they liked the product because it saved them money compared to the brand-new one. It was only an added bonus that it was environmentally friendly, too!
I helped start RTMworld 18 years ago. The RT in our name stands for “Recycling Times.” We launched an international magazine named “Recycling Times,” in Chinese and English. Then, we launched others with partner support in Korean, Arabic, and Russian languages.
Today, there has been an awakening, and the demand for remanufactured cartridges continues to grow. I still believe that most end users buy them firstly because they are cheaper. But the “green” benefits are an added bonus.
We are part of the Electronics (E-waste) industry and join at least 10 other unique global industries that focus on recycling, including Paper, Plastic, Metal (including aluminium, steel, copper, etc.), Glass, Textiles, Organics, Construction and Demolition, Tires (tyres), Automotive, Batteries and Packaging.
But there is still a huge need to recycle. Did you know:
- … there are enough plastic bottles discarded over a year to go around the planet four times?
- … more than 90% of our ocean plastics come from just 10 rivers?
- … the largest dumping site for plastics is not a landfill; it is the Pacific Ocean.
March 18, 2024, marks the seventh time Global Recycling Day has been observed. It was created in 2018 to highlight the importance of recycling. The mission, as set out by the Global Recycling Foundation, is twofold:
- To tell world leaders recycling is too important not to be a global issue and that a common, joined-up approach to recycling is urgently needed.
- To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens, we won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.
