RT Office Notice for International Labor Day
Staff at RT will join the rest of China to observe International Labor Day. The office will be closed on May 1 and will reopen for regular work on May 6 (Thursday).
We wish everyone a happy international Labor Day, especially frontline workers around the globe who do not get a holiday and continue the fight against COVID-19.
What’s Happening in China
A record number of domestic tourists are travelling across China for the Labor Day holiday unleashing months of pent-up demand for travel.
The Chinese Ministry of Transport (MOT) estimates that some 265 million passenger trips will be made during the holiday, also known as May Day, from May 1 to 5. That’s similar to the pre-pandemic levels in 2019, but 120 percent above 2020 when the tourism sector was still reeling.
Millions missed their chance to travel and visit their hometowns during the week-long Chinese Lunar New Year holiday in February as authorities moved to minimize COVID-19 infection risks. With COVID-19 well-controlled domestically, tourist flows are likely to hit a record high in May.
About International Labor Day
According to Wikipedia, International Workers’ Day, also known as Workers’ Day or Labor Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival.
The date was chosen by a pan-national organization of socialist and communist political parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886. The 1904 Sixth Conference of the Second International, called on “all Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on the First of May for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace.”
The first of May is a national, public holiday in many countries across the world, in most cases as “Labor Day”, “International Workers’ Day” or some similar name – although some countries celebrate a Labor Day on other dates significant to them, such as the United States and Canada, which celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September.
