Chipjet Develops Replacement Chips for HP+ Cartridges
Chipjet Develops Replacement Chips for HP+ Cartridges
China-based Chipjet claims it is developing fine-quality replacement chips for use in cartridges suitable for HP+ printers.
HP Inc. launched its first HP+ printers in November 2020, which are designed for families and small businesses.
The HP+ smart printing system is a brand-new cloud-based solution that integrates HP hardware, HP original supplies and the HP Smart app.
According to Chipjet, the HP+ program has not made much of an impact upon third-party chipmakers so far. But the demand is increasing.

What is HP+?
The first printers with the benefits of HP+ are LaserJet M200 series, OfficeJet Pro 8000e and 9000e series. Recently, HP said it would add DeskJet 2700e and 4100e series and ENVY 6000e and 6400e series to the HP+ line.
HP+ is an end-to-end system that has the following exclusive benefits besides standard print functions:
- New connected cloud that detects and fixes connectivity issues
- Print and scan from the palm of your hand with the HP Smart app
- New Private Pickup feature releases documents only when you are at the printer

The Influence on Third-party Consumables
As the market share of third-party consumables increases from year to year, OEMs have adopted numerous technologies to prevent the use of replacement consumables in their printers.
One of the most common ways is updating the firmware on cartridge chips, which, however, can be overcome by third-party chipmakers. HP has tried other methods to prevent the use of compatible cartridges including its Instant Ink subscription program. Instant Ink enables HP to monitor the printing needs of end-users online and sends new ink before it runs out. Printers need to stay connected to the Internet to keep printing while enrolled in the Instant Ink program. Those who cancel their Instant Ink subscription will fin their printer will not print even with the Instant Ink cartridge installed. Such policies have attracted criticism from various parties.
People who buy HP+ printers are not forced to sign up for Instant Ink, but once activated, HP+ is embedded in the device and will require the use of only original HP ink or toner for the lifetime of the printer. It can be found that the HP+ program is expanded in the company’s lower tiers of product portfolio that are inexpensive. Moreover, customers can enjoy the following extra benefits if they purchase HP+ printers:
- 6 free months of Instant Ink trial (After 6 months, monthly fee applies unless cancelled)
- One extra year of HP warranty
- 24 free months of Advanced HP Smart app solutions
Currently, HP+ printers are only available in the USA. However, HP Inc. is expanding its HP+ program into more countries. “We are not surprised at this innovative action. However, the “original cartridge only” requirement does limit customers’ purchasing range. Compared with inexpensive compatible cartridges, the higher price of original cartridges will increase the financial burden on businesses of high printing demands as well as families,” said a spokesman from Chipjet.
