Zhono Guide to Address Cartridge Chip Installation Issues
Zhono Guide to Address Cartridge Chip Installation Issues
This guide outlines a solution to a common problem when incorrect chip installation triggers error prompts. Additionally, it provides general tips for handling color chips across various copier brands. Read this article or watch Zhono’s official article to learn more.
Background
A customer reported that their printer displayed an error message when replacing a color chip on HP W2080A cartridges. Upon investigation, the following was discovered:
- The cartridges had mismatched chips: the Yellow (Y) chip was installed on the Cyan (C) cartridge, and the Cyan chip was on the Yellow cartridge. Despite this misplacement, the printer initially functioned.
- When a new Yellow chip was installed on the Y cartridge, the printer had two Y chips, which triggered an error.
Solution
To avoid errors, ensure that chips match the correct toner cartridge color. Use the etched lettering on chips as a guide:
- HP Chips: These use numeric identifiers (0/1/2/3) to distinguish colors.
- Zhono Chips: The K/C/M/Y lettering indicates the corresponding colors: Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.
Chip Installation Across Copier Brands
For some brands, including Xerox, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Ricoh, Pantum and Lexmar, copiers do not require the chip color to correspond with the toner cartridge color. Installing any set of four K/C/M/Y chips on any cartridges enables proper operation. Examples include:
- Xerox CP105/C310 series
- HP 118A series
- Samsung 404 series
- Dell 2825 series
For these models, chip misplacement does not impact functionality.
Other brands, including Samsung, Toshiba, Sharp, HP, and Canon, copier brands require precise color-to-chip correspondence. Installing a mismatched chip will trigger an error. Examples include:
- HP CF400/500 series
- Canon 045/046 series
- Brother TN227/821 series
- Lexmark CS820 series
- OKI C811/910 series
